“The First Purge” (2018) is a prequel to The Purge, exploring how the controversial annual event began. Directed by Gerard McMurray, the film takes a deeper look at the political and social origins of the Purge.

The story is set on Staten Island, where the government launches an experimental program allowing all crime to be legal for 12 hours. Citizens are encouraged to participate, with financial incentives offered to those who stay and engage in the event.

At first, many participants treat it as an opportunity for minor crimes and chaos. However, the situation quickly escalates as external forces manipulate the experiment, turning it into a violent and deadly operation.

The film follows several characters trying to survive the night, including a local community leader and a drug lord who becomes an unexpected protector. As the truth behind the experiment unfolds, it becomes clear that the Purge was never just about crime—it was about control.

“The First Purge” focuses heavily on political themes, social inequality, and systemic manipulation, offering a darker and more origin-focused perspective on the franchise.
